SCORPION HAZE – 3.10pm LEICESTER
SMALL STAKES WIN BET ADVISED AT THE 33/1 AVAILABLE WITH BET365
I’m not expecting too much from Scorpion Haze as it’s difficult to know what to expect but, all things considered, he looks worth a small interest at the current 33/1 on offer.
The selection has been making his way back from a long 627 day break in two unsuitable Heavy ground handicap hurdles races so it has been no surprise to see him finish well down the field before struggling and being pulled-up at Exeter over 2m2.5f six weeks ago.
So, what are the grounds for optimism today? Well, the two runs won’t have done his fitness any harm and he has been dropped 8lb down the weights to a workable looking mark of 107 (based on his pre-break hurdles form) now making his debut over fences. He has a decent jumps pedigree being related to useful chaser Calusa Caldera who was officially rated 129 at one stage having won 5-times over fences. He wasn’t as good over hurdles so it’s possible this move to chasing could be the making of Scorpion Haze too who, at 8 years old, likely still has his best years ahead of him in this sphere.
Other plus points are the drying conditions at the track, Ali Stronge’s horses are running well for the most part, the step up in trip to 2m4f should help, and the in form James Bowen (Last 14 days: 5-31, 16%) keeps the ride. He ran well to finish second in a bumper the only time he was tried in cheek-pieces so it’s possible a new headgear combination today (a first-time tongue-tie being added to cheek-pieces) could spark some improvement. His bumper form also compares well in this field.
He’s risky as he may need another run or two before he’s fully fit after such a long break and we’ve never saw him jump a fence but there are enough positives above for us to take a small punt on him. A win bet is advised with only 6-runners taking part. Good luck!
