Hi guys, I’ve turned my eye to the big race of the day on ITV which is of course the 2m2f Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket where 22-runners are due to take part. The race has an open look to it with several horses looking like they have winning chances so I’ve tried to find value and have landed on Bascule at 28/1. He looks well-worth an each way interest particularly with the firms highlighted above all paying the first 6 places. Skybet are the only firm I am aware of who are paying 7 places on the race but they are only offering odds of 25/1.
Bascule is a 4 year old gelding who made great progress on the All-Weather towards the end of last year winning 4-times in a row before finishing 4th in an introductory hurdles race. He has started this season well without excelling but as a consequence his handicap mark of 92 has remained unchanged and he is now much fitter making his fourth start of the season.
He only finished 5th of 10 in a trial for this race over C&D 3 weeks ago where he was beaten 4.75L but the race wasn’t run to suit as they set just a steady pace before it turned in to a bit of a sprint over the final 3 furlongs when he was caught a bit short of room before running on by which time he had too much ground to make up. I can see him doing much better here where he is likely to get a truly run race and a pace to aim at so his stamina will hopefully come in to play late on.
The selection has a nice profile for the race which has been won by 4 year olds 3-times in the past 10 years, the application of first-time cheek-pieces could spark further improvement, I like his draw in stall 16, and the Richard Hughes yard are in form (Last 14 days: 4-25, 16%). A top 6 finish would be acceptable at 28/1 but I think he could yet have more to offer and wouldn’t be surprised to see him go close. Best of Luck if you decide to have a bet!
