SERGEANT– 7.00pm NEWTON ABBOTT

0.5 POINTS EACH WAY BET ADVISED AT THE 20/1 AVAILABLE WITH THE FOLLOWING BOOKMAKERS WHO ARE BOTH PAYING 5 PLACES

The 4 year old gelding Sergeant looked to be a fair flat horse in France last year, good enough to be given a mark of 67 for here, but he has been given the basement mark of 74 for his handicap debut over the sticks. If he really is as good as his flat mark, we would expect him to be competitive off around 100, and I think his run in the jumpers bumper when a 3l 5th from a poor position, shows he clearly has an engine (99 RPR), as all four horses ahead of him are 115+ over the sticks.

It could well be that he was bogged down on the winter ground in his qualifying runs, as he did jump nicely, and he hasn’t actually got any form on soft ground, so running on quicker ground for the first time really could see a massive improvement from the horse.

It’s his first run for 208 days, so fitness is taken on trust, but as he can’t get any lower in the handicap, you like to think he will be straight for this.

All in all, this is a crazy price to be laying this horse at, as he is potentially chucked in.

Eventful is worth a watch in the market, pulled out LTO after being backed early.
